A large local electric utility company was experiencing problems with their power billing system. The recurring system failures were impacting the power data collection and also the power billing process, ultimately affecting the revenue stream. Analysis concluded that the power billing system had reached its maximum threshold capacity and required moving the billing system and the associated software to a newer hardware platform. To minimize the impact on the software changes, it was decided to move to an upgraded version of the same hardware vendor platform. The power billing system software was enhanced to eliminate anomalies and increase reliability, add new features and allow for future growth. The hardware was upgraded to the latest version and changes were made to the current applications to take advantage of the new hardware and new operating system available features. The end result was a system that was highly reliable with greater throughput and productivity and required minimal administration.
